That Deaf RDH Foundation Race Description

September is National Deaf Awareness Month.

Run or walk 1 mile, 5k, or 10k on the pavement or treadmill ANYWHERE.

The founder of That Deaf RDH, Amanda, was born with bilateral profound hearing loss. Amanda has grown up with various adversities and set out to break down the barriers. Amanda graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. After graduating, she spent several years working with special needs children. Amanda later returned to school to pursue a degree in dental hygiene at Northern Virginia Community College. She became a licensed dental hygienist in 2017 and has been practicing as a clinical dental hygienist ever since. She currently holds dual licenses in Virginia and Texas.

Amanda began to research for a blog about deaf or hard of hearing dental professionals that are working in the industry and she was surprised at how few articles there were relating to the topic. Through her various searches she realized there’s not enough of us. Us being deaf or hard of hearing dental professionals. The deaf and hard-of-hearing population makes up less than 1% of the professionals working in the dental field.

Challenges in this particular setting include difficulties communicating due to masks, background dental noises, and a lack of deaf awareness. Amanda's goal is to increase accessibility to oral health care regardless of circumstances.

That Deaf RDH is a scholarship awarded to any deaf or hard-of-hearing person(s) attending an accredited dental hygiene school to help cover supplemental costs such as uniforms, scrubs, loupes, instruments, exam fees, etc.

All proceeds will go toward the That Deaf RDH Foundation, a nonprofit that helps raise awareness for, increase access to dental education, and financially assists qualified candidates who are DoHH and pursuing an education in dental hygiene.

That Deaf RDH is a 501c3 nonprofit organization
